Meet two Brits with a passion for Spanish wine
Keeping it simple
We're Matthew and Ben, two Brits who have made Spain their home, and Spanish vineyards their playground. We think Spanish wine is some of the best around (and believe us, we've tested that theory). But we also appreciate that for someone who just wants a glass of something nice to drink, and doesn't necessarily speak fluent Spanish, it can be hard to get to grips with all those grapes and all that terminology. So we decided to set up Simply Spanish Wine to help you navigate the world of Spanish wine, in two ways...
Helping you choose...
To start with, we offer a carefully curated list of wines that represent the different grapes, regions, and styles that make Spanish wine what it is. They all come from small to medium-sized producers, and they are all good quality, great value wines. And we keep our list small and manageable. You won't get overwhelmed with hundreds of bottles. So it's easier for you to choose a great wine.
...and helping you learn
And for the more adventurous wine lovers, we also also offer resources to help you to get better acquainted with Spanish wine. You'll find articles on different regions and grapes, tasting videos for individual wines, as well as glossary and factual resources. All with the aim of helping you understand what goes into a bottle of wine, and how to choose one you might like.
Who are we?
Matthew
Matthew first entered the wine world more than 30 years ago, working at Stephen Spurrier’s wonderful Les Caves de la Madeleine wine shop in Paris. He then headed south to Madrid and spent twenty years at the British Embassy where he developed a broad network of friends and contacts across the Spanish wine sector, as well as a deep understanding of the economic links between the UK and Spain. In 2016, Matthew set up Desoutter & James SL to export wine to the UK, particularly distributors to the UK on-trade. Simply Spanish Wine is an extension of that project, focused on bringing the best of Spanish wine to international residents here in Spain.
Ben
Ben is a marketing and communications professional with over 20 years' experience. He's been passionate about wine since his 18th birthday when he was given a bottle of St Émilion as a present and began to realise wine could be much more than just a drink to go with Sunday lunch. When he arrived in Spain nearly 20 years ago he discovered the enormous variety of styles that could be found within a bottle – and the exceptional value for money that Spanish wine represented. Since then, he has spent his free time travelling and tasting his way around Spain. When Matthew launched Desoutter & James, Ben acted as his adviser on web and communications and is now working with him to help drive Simply Spanish Wine's digital presence and marketing strategy. He also tastes a lot of the wine!
