This pack gives you two great benefits. Not only do you get to enjoy three excellent red wines, you also have a chance to compare three different wines made with the same grape - Mencía. One version from Galicia and two from Bierzo, each with their own characteristics and flavours, reflecting the different regions and soil types, as well as the skills of their respective winemakers.
Each wine has a tasting video below, or you can listen to our podcast where we taste all three wines alongside each other.
Massimo
- Producer: Atlantic Galician Wineries
- Region: DO Ribeira Sacra
- Vintage: 2020
- ABV: 12.5%
- Grape: Mencía | Sousón
Massimo is a wonderful young red wine made from Mencía and Sousón vines planted between 30 and 90 years ago in slate and granite soils on the steep, terraced slopes of Ribeira Sacra in Galicia. Cherry red with a violet rim, the nose is brimming with delicious aromas of red and tropical fruits, with yeasty undertones from the time the wine spends on its lees.
Casar de Burbia Mencía
- Producer: Casar de Burbia
- Region: DO Bierzo
- Vintage: 2017
- ABV: 14%
- Grape: Mencía
Casar de Burbia Mencía 2017 is a 100% old-vine Mencía from a selection of different vineyard plots. The wine is clean and brilliant purple in colour. Initial aromas of raspberries and cherries combine well with caramel notes from the wood. Chewy and tannic on the palate, it has good acidity which will help it age further in the bottle for a few years. The wine has a long finish with an agreeable, slightly powdery astringency.
Hombros
- Producer: Casar de Burbia
- Region: DO Bierzo
- Vintage: 2018
- ABV: 14%
- Grape: Mencía
Hombros has a wonderful nose of wild blackberries and blueberries interwoven with subtle notes of summer flowers. Excellent balance between mature tannins, lively acidity and the depth of the fruit. Harmonious and long finish.
