Description
Gómez Cruzado Crianza is a red wine produced in DOCa Rioja by Gomez Cruzado. Founded in 1886, the winery sits in the famous Barrio de la Estación or ”station district” in the town of Haro, where the railway arrived in the second half of the 19th century and where the most classic and renowned wineries of the Rioja Alta are located.
That said, this is no stuffy old-fashioned wine. The new Gómez Cruzado generation is modernising the classic profile of wines from this region, and their 2020 Crianza is a perfect example of their work.
In the technical sense, this is very much a traditional Riojan crianza, made with Tempranillo grapes and aged for 12 months in American oak barrels. But the inclusion of 25% Garnacha and a 3-day cold maceration before fermenting, give this wine a decidedly modern personality.
The Garnacha adds a touch of freshness, and the wine has more aromas of cherries and fruits of the forest than you would get from a single varietal Tempranillo. Whilst the cold maceration brings out more of the colours and flavours from the grape without extracting the tannins. So despite having spent 12 months in oak, the toasted notes and the tannins are restrained, and the wine has an overall balance that makes this crianza polished, clean, and very easy to enjoy. Not to mention exceptional value for money.
