Thanks for subscribing to the Simply Spanish Wine monthly wine box.
This month's wine box offers a simple introduction to all the quality and variety Spanish wine has to offer. We've got a light, crisp and fresh white from Galicia, a tantalising rosé from Rioja which is perfect as a summer aperitif, and a light, fruity Bobal from eastern Spain, which is full enough to sit well alongside any dinner, but still light enough to enjoy with the heat - just pop it into the fridge for 30 mins before uncorking!
More details on each wine are below.
D'MATEO QUINTUS 2020
- Producer: Atlantic Galician Wineries
- DO: Ribeiro
- Vintage: 2020
- ABV: 12%
- Grape: Godello | Torrontés | Treixadura
Treixadura, Godello, and Torrontés grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand in the sloping, terraced vineyards in the Avia river valley north of Ourense in Galicia. This produces a wine that is straw yellow in colour, with a very clean, steely and mineral nose with aromas of fresh young apple and crisp pear. More herbaceous notes on the palate, coupled with green apple, citrus and lime. Deliciously juicy in the mouth.
Like many Galician white wines, D’Mateo Quintas makes a wonderful pairing for all kinds of white fish, octopus, mussels, clams and all the other delicious shellfish that you can find in this coastal region of north-west Spain.
A very good alternative for all those Sauvignon Blanc fans out there.
SOLARCE ROSADO 2020
- Producer: Casa La Rad
- DO: Rioja
- Vintage: 2020
- ABV: 14%
- Grape: Carignan | Garnacha | Graciano | Tempranillo
Solarce Rosé is made by respected winemaker Marta Gallego using the traditional sangrado method. The red grapes are brought into the winery and the free-run (i.e.unpressed) juice remains in contact with the grape skins for between 6 to 12 hours at a controlled temperature of 10°C. After this light maceration, the free-run juice is placed in a different tank where it ferments at a controlled temperature of 14 - 16°C to preserve the aromatic complexity of the four grape varieties.
Somewhere between pale strawberry and salmon-pink in colour, this is a wine with strong aromas from the four different grape varieties. Notes of strawberry and raspberry are prominent, evolving over time into white blossom and stone fruit. Long and persistent on the palate, with a delicate acidity that makes it a delightfully fresh wine.
Wonderful chilled as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to rice or seafood dishes.
Rayuelo is an exceptional red wine made by Rosalía Molina using old Bobal vines planted between 70 and 100 years ago. The Altolandon vineyard is 100% organic and all their wines are certified organic as well as being vegan-friendly.
Rayuelo is brimming with wonderful Mediterranean scents like pine needles, herbs, and even some menthol. You’ll also get a touch of cedar and vanilla from the wine’s 8 months ageing in wooden barrels.
In the mouth the fruit flavours really come to the fore, enlivening the palate with bursts of red fruits, mature plum, and blackcurrant. But the wine holds sufficient acidity to act as a gentle balance to all that fruit, giving the wine a delicacy that sets it apart from the average Mediterranean reds.
